How Does a Pneumatic Actuator Work?

A pneumatic actuator works based on the principle of using compressed air to generate mechanical motion.

Compressed air is supplied to the actuator's chamber. The pressure of this air forces a piston or diaphragm to move within the actuator.

The direction of the movement depends on how the air is introduced and exhausted from the chambers. For example, if air is introduced on one side of the piston, it will push it in one direction. To reverse the movement, the air is exhausted from that side and introduced to the opposite side.

The force exerted by the actuator is determined by the pressure of the compressed air and the size of the piston or diaphragm. Higher air pressure and larger surface areas result in greater force.

Seals and gaskets within the actuator prevent air leakage and ensure efficient operation.

The air supply control is typically managed by valves, which can be manually or electronically operated. These valves regulate the flow and pressure of the air to control the speed and position of the actuator's movement.
